Cussler the elder could always be counted on to serve up an action-packed Dirk Pitt thriller. Now, with help from his son, also named Dirk, and accomplished narrator Scott Brick, the action is ratcheted up to a frenetic pace. In this eighteenth Pitt adventure, a villain has harvested a deadly toxin from two sunken WWII Japanese submarines, intending to release the substance on a sleeping world. How Pitt and his family (his daughter is also involved) save mankind this time is not for the telling. Suffice it to say that Brick's slick performance does justice not only to the plot, but also to the assortment of foreign characters whose accents ring true. His voluble reading makes the hours of listening fly by. A.L.H. (c) AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine

The chimera virus, a genetically mutated deadly brew, is released in a remote Alaskan village. Dirk Pitt and his sister, Summer, learn that Kang, a South Korean industrialist, is the culprit, and their death-defying pursuit of him ensues before Kang can loose more of the virus on the continental United States. Ron McLarty uses his versatile vocal range to flow easily between Asian and American accents, giving the impression of multiple narrators. When Dirk and Summer are captured and left to drown, he portrays their desperation with riveting bursts of staccato dialogue. This cunningly crafted thriller, filled with action and suspense, begins fast and only accelerates. G.D.W. (c) AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine
